Proving conclusively that a discussion of art with Steve Martin can be funny and entertaining, Stephen Colbert devoted a portion of his “Colbert Report” on Wednesday night to an erudite exercise with Mr. Martin, the art collector, “Object of Beauty” author and occasional adversary of the 92nd Street Y. In the above segment — which followed a conversation in which Mr. Martin was asked to distinguish between an Ellsworth Kelly painting and a Sherwin-Williams swatch — Mr. Martin tries to determine the value of a portrait of Mr. Colbert, with the assistance of Frank Stella, Shepard Fairey and Andres Serrano. (Boy, if life were only like this.) Now, how do you find comedy in the National Portrait Gallery controversy?
