Austin joins global cities for Leadership Exchange Program addressing urban affordability for the creative sector

AUSTIN, TX—May 21, 2018—This June, representatives from the City of Austin’s Economic Development Department will join cultural leaders from around the world to explore and address global challenges facing creative communities. Funded by an award from Bloomberg Philanthropies and Google Arts & Culture, staffers from Austin’s Cultural Arts and Global Business Divisions will participate in the first-ever Leadership Exchange Program, an initiative of the World Cities Culture Forum (WCCF) of which Austin is a member. Hosted in Toronto and led by the non-profit creative placemaking organization Artscape, the Exchange will bring together thought leaders from Austin, Amsterdam, London, New York, San Francisco, Sydney and Warsaw. The cities will explore urban affordability for the creative sector and establish global best practices for retaining and growing affordable creative spaces.

“The City of Austin recognizes the affordability crisis facing our citizens, including those in our creative community, and has identified this issue as a key priority,” said Meghan Wells, Manager of Austin’s Cultural Arts Division. “Participation in the Leadership Exchange Program will enable us to address this challenge with an eye toward what is working in other cities and develop creative solutions to add to our strategies and resources.”

Kate Levin, Chair of the Leadership Exchange Jury and program lead for Bloomberg Philanthropies Arts, added, “By creating the opportunity for cities to learn firsthand about the activities and approaches of their peers, the Leadership Exchange Program will advance the unique capacity of the creative sector in addressing civic issues.”

CADD FUND 2018 Announces Finalists for June 10th event

Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas will again celebrate creativity and community with a Sunday Soup Supper on June 10th at 3015 at Trinity Groves. CADD FUNd will be a fun, fast-paced evening of sharing innovative ideas about potential artistic projects. CADD FUNd will make possible a high-impact idea that needs the support of the DFW arts community.

The idea for the annual CADD FUNd was inspired by similar events throughout the United States such as Feast in Brooklyn, Incubate in Chicago and Spread in Santa Fe. Over the past several years, numerous organizations have taken the basic premise of a Sunday soup dinner - collect creative proposals, invite the public to pay, eat, and listen, and then democratically vote for a winner - and adapted it to their own local purposes.

This year's CADD FUNd will be awarded to one of these six finalists:

The six finalists will be selected from all of the applicants by three esteemed jurors; Amy Lewis Hofland, Director of the Crow Collection of Asian Art; Maggie Adler, Associate Curator of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art; and Phillip Collins, Curator, Scholar, and former Chief Curator at the African American Museum in Dallas.

During the event on June 10th, the finalists will present short proposals for original and yet-to-be-realized new projects. Members of the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions and then the audience participants will vote for their favorite project. Last year’s winner, Spencer Evans, will also give a short presentation during the event. After a short recess to tally the votes, the winner of CADD FUNd 2018 will be announced!

The CADD FUNd is $2500 - $7500 + and beyond. Funds are raised by ticket sales and will go to the winner chosen by the audience.

Tickets are $40 per person and are on sale now.

Tickets will not be available at the door. In an effort to make CADD FUNd 2018 as accessible as possible for the students and artists, $10 of each ticket sold will be applied to jurors’ fees and administrative costs in lieu of charging application fees.

While CADD FUNd is about raising much-needed cash, we hope that it will also be a forum to discuss the many other needs and resources that help make projects happen.

Call for Entries Open for 2018 Art of Peace – Tyler Visual Art Exhibit


(TYLER, TX) - Entries now are being accepted for the Sowing Seeds of Peace Visual Art Exhibit as part of the Art of Peace – Tyler celebration, a citywide commemoration of the United Nations International Day of Peace, Sept. 21.
“Art of Peace – Tyler is happy to once again to partner with the Tyler Museum of Art to invite regional artists to offer their creative responses to the idea of peace and to our 2018 theme, Sowing Seeds of Peace,” said Anne McCrady, co-founder and co-director of the peace event.
The visual art show will be presented as a juried exhibit in the museum’s education classroom Sept. 16-23, at the Tyler Museum of Art, 1300 S. Mahon Ave. on the Tyler Junior College main campus. The exhibit will be open to the public and admission is free.
The jury for selection will consist of members of the Art of Peace - Tyler committee and TMA representatives. The jury has the option to select up to two works per artist for inclusion in the show. Past exhibits have included the work of artists from Austin, Dallas, Lubbock and the East Texas area.
“We are privileged that the Art of Peace - Tyler committee once again has asked us to be the host venue for this exhibition,” TMA Executive Director Chris Leahy said. “The work we have seen over the past four years of our partnership has grown increasingly more dynamic and accomplished, and we are proud to have the opportunity to participate in such a great community event.”

SUBMISSIONS
· Artists must be older than 18 and reside in Texas
· Entry deadline is Tuesday, July 31, 2018. Entries received, whether by mail or e-mail, after midnight July 31 will not be accepted
· Works in all media are eligible, provided they can be juried by digital image. These include painting, drawing, printmaking, photography/digital media, sculpture, mixed media and fine craft (wood, metal, clay, fiber, glass)
· Artwork should relate to the 2018 theme, Sowing Seeds of Peace, as a metaphor for the creative endeavor of peace work.
· Artwork must be able to fit through a regular-sized doorway
· Works chosen must be finished, dry and ready to exhibit
· Each artist may submit two pieces of art. Artists’ submission must consist of:
o Three high-quality digital JPEG images of each proposed work, each clearly labeled: Artist Last Name-Title-View. If mailed CD is to be returned, artists should include a self-addressed, stamped envelope
o A description of each work that includes title, media, size and description
o Artist CV or résumé with contact information including Website, e-mail, phone
and mailing address
· Artists should e-mail digital images, descriptions of work, CV and artist information to artofpeaceart@gmail.com or mail a CD with information packet to: Art of Peace – Tyler Exhibit Committee, Tyler Museum of Art, 1300 S. Mahon Ave, Tyler, TX 75701
ARTWORK IMAGES
“Since jury selection uses images of the artwork, artists should send high-quality images that represent their pieces as accurately and professionally as possible,” Mrs. McCrady said. Artists must submit images as JPEG files. Art of Peace - Tyler reserves the right to reproduce artwork images of accepted entries for promotion of the exhibition in the media.
The TMA does not allow art sales on the premises. However, given artist permission, guests will be provided with names of artists and selected contact information, she said. Visitors who wish to purchase artwork may contact the artist directly regarding a sale after the close of the show.


INSURANCE
The TMA will insure exhibited works from the time of their safe arrival at the Museum until they are returned to the artist, for the insurance values indicated on the entry form. Insurance values will correspond with the demonstrable fair market value of the work. Details of the insurance coverage are addressed in the final loan agreement for selected works. Submission of an entry to the exhibition constitutes agreement on the part of the entrant to the conditions set forth in the competition.

(Los Angeles, California) – It has been an eventful year for LA Artist Karen Hochman Brown. The digital artist currently has a solo show on view at The Main in Santa Clarita and the Jewish Federation in Monrovia. She recently concluded her artist residency at the Crain Art Gallery in San Marino, plus she has two upcoming solo exhibitions scheduled at the Museum of Art and History in Lancaster and the California Center for Photographic and Digital Arts in Santa Ana.

Hochman Brown continues the wave of interest in her work with a commission for a poster on the buses and trains of the LA Metro. On view throughout Los Angeles from May 7 to July 1, 2018, the artist’s work weaves imagery of train tracks, aloe blooms, and peacock feathers. Drawing from elements one might find at the Arboretum, Hochman Brown comments, "I was inspired by many non-native species co-existing in harmony, much like the kaleidoscope of people from across the globe who live in Los Angeles County.”

Hochman Brown’s inspired art has redefined the possibilities of abstraction with digital media and continues that development in Shoreline Symmetries at The Main gallery space in Santa Clarita. The artist has departed from purely abstract compositions to examine her techniques among landscapes. To this end, Hochman Brown has envisioned the landscape as hyperreal, otherworldly, and defying of natural phenomena.

In previous work, the artist engaged questions about cultural identity. Her works referenced Judaic iconography with their six-point structures and formed the basis of the artist’s technical, expressive, and conceptual investigations. Currently, Hochman Brown’s subject has evolved to a broader consideration of the natural world and its irreducible makeup of fractal geometries. Comprised of multiple layers of floral imagery, Hochman Brown isolates and pieces together their disparate elements into abstracted kaleidoscopic tapestries. The artist’s painterly process utilizes various digital photographic editing tools and software in her meticulous manipulations of tonality, brightness, and saturation to create an illusion of depth.

Karen Hochman Brown received her B.A. in Art from Pitzer College, has continued to study math, and did post-graduate work at California College of the Arts and Crafts where her master’s thesis introduced Construction Geometry via Art, a Junior High School curriculum she taught at Pasadena Waldorf School. She continued to study the interconnections of math and art via technology at UCLA studying graphic design in late-nineties. Her work has been widely exhibited in California and the United States.
